The history of aviation

The most important exhibits in this group are, of course, the aeroplanes and helicopters used by the Polish Armed Forces. The collection of the former currently comprises 25 aircraft. The oldest is the Li-2 transport aircraft, built in 1945, which was nicknamed ‘Stasiek’ during its service.

The collection’s highlights include the unique ISKRA-200 BR aircraft (of which only one was ever built) and the beautifully restored Yak-23 jet (the first jet aircraft used in significant numbers by the Polish Armed Forces), which is currently on display at the 31st Tactical Aviation Base in Krzesiny. Another highlight of the museum is undoubtedly the Il-28 bomber, which has stood right next to the museum’s headquarters almost since its inception, welcoming visitors and passers-by. The helicopter collection currently comprises five aircraft: the SSM-1, SM-2, Mi-2P, a prototype Mi-2M2 and the Mi-4A.

A large group of exhibits in this category includes: pilots’ dress and combat uniforms, personal memorabilia of former soldiers, aviation weaponry, and structural components such as propellers, engines, radio sets, etc. Of particular interest here are aircraft components from the Second World War found in our region, including a unique landing gear strut from the Heinkel He-177 ‘Greif’.
